A bit of history…
More than 142 years ago, this form of funding was born and is continuously expanding year after year. However, contrary to what I might think, the origin of crowdfunding was not born with the Internet.
The origin of crowdfunding. First of all, already in the eighteenth century, century, some authors, composers and artists were soliciting many investors to support their project. For instance, Alexander Pope realized in 1713 the English translation of a Greek poem. Moreover, in 1783, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart offered manuscripts signed by his hand to those who agreed to finance his concertos played in a Viennese concert hall.
Initial project of the Sagrada famillia
Neogothic project of Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano.
The origin of crowdfunding. Thus, the Sagrada Familia funded through crowdfunding is the longest project in the history of crowdfunding.
Started in 1882 the Sagrada Família, “Expiatory temple of the Holy Family” is a basilica whose construction is still unfinished to this day.
In addition, it is Barcelona’s most emblematic monument and the most visited in Spain, it is the work of the brilliant architect Antoni Plàcid Guillem Gaudí. In fact, Gaudí devoted forty-three years to its construction until 1926, the date of his death. As a result, leaving the Work unfinished.
Hence, his successors are, the assistant of Gaudí, Domènec Sugrañes, then Josep Maria Subirachs, and Jordi Bonet i Armengollui.
La Sagrada Família was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015.
Thus, since its creation in 1882, the construction of the temple has been financed by donations and contributions. First, on December 31, 1881, Josep Maria Bocabella commissioned by the “association of devotees of St. Joseph” acquires with money collected by alms, the block of houses between the streets Mallorca, Marina, Provença , and Sardenya for 172,000 pesetas to buy the land
Subsequently, in December 1884, Gaudí signed the project. The crypt was inaugurated on March 19, 1885. Followed by, in 1891, the work of the façade of the Nativity began.
Moreover, the funds are collected by an autonomous and private non-profit association created in 1893. The Fundació de la junta constructora del Expiatori Temple of the Sagrada Família presided over by the Archbishop of Barcelona.
Subsequently, a kitty that will continue to progress given the influx of millions of visitors since. In short, a crowdfunding platform of some sort, 133 years old. Moreover, it should continue until 2026. Estimated date of completion.
Finally, in any case a world record of crowdfunding!
The origin of crowdfunding.
Albeit, one of the most ambitious projects of the origin of crowdfunding at the time was launched in 1885 by Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York World. More specifically, Joseph Pulitzer raised funds from 100,000 people around the world. Fundraising was done with the means of the time. Correspondingly, articles in the press, shows, banquets, public taxes, lottery. But above all, thanks to the donations of thousands of individuals who finance the construction of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. In short, at the end of the year, the funds collected amounted to 400,000 francs at the time. Approximately 105 million current euros (€) (in equivalence of economic weight).
This summarizes the origin of crowdfunding. Now a new page of history has just been written with crowdfunding, and this is CFI. I am ready to write my own story with an outstanding team, Team Alain Lecompte CFI.
